Between Student Council and Inflation

For over six months, the Student Council failed at coming to an agreement on a rise in student fees. Only a few weeks prior to the University Elections did they start having more intense conversations surrounding the issue — while almost forgetting to include the Student Faculty Councils. But what exactly was at risk for our SFCs?

Stolen knowledge

The Matilda effect describes the systematic discrimination of female scientists. Its name stems from Matilda Joslyn Gage, a feminist and sociologist, who opposed the widespread sentiment that women were not suitable for scientific work. This article will highlight some of the extraordinary scientific achievements and contributions made by women in science.

Culture for (H)all(e)? When barriers block entry.

Culture should be for everyone – but is it really? While cultural offerings are on the rise, accessibility often falls through the cracks. However, solutions exist for many of the current obstacles. How cultural offers can become more inclusive and what the project “Kulturzeit für alle” (cultural time for all) has to do with it.

Mind Matters: Mental health in student life

Studying means more than just attending lectures and taking exams. It is a phase of life full of changes, challenges and new experiences. While this time can be exciting and rewarding, it also brings with it a number of stressors that can impact our mental health. But what does “mental health” actually mean and why is it so important, especially for students?

Now what is the climate plan supposed to achieve and will the planned measures even be sufficient?

An expedition into digital volunteering

Being a volunteer everywhere and every time due to digitalization. This is the way digital volunteering defines itself and thus offers a variety of opportunities to become an active volunteer. In order to introduce the residents of Saxony-Anhalt to this new form of volunteering, the organization Freiwilligenagentur Halle-Saalkreis e.V., has developed the platform “gutes-geht.digital – Engagiert in Sachsen-Anhalt”.

Roll the dice

Almost every household has access to a virtually infinite number of games. PC, console or mobile – no matter the platform: it has never been easier to find entertainment. Nevertheless, “playing without a screen”, completely without the help of digital augmentations, has its own charm which has its place even in the digital age.

Originally John comes from Colombia. In this interview, he tells how things went for him in Halle in the time of COVID-19.

The Good About Normality

Terrorist attacks such as the one that took place on October 9th in Halle are shocking events: They are unnerving and generally challenge the state of coexistence in a community. Dealing with them is often rather difficult, but possible. What such events can trigger, but do not have to.

Faces of the Student Council

Settling in a new city can be difficult. Moving to an entirely new country, however, is even more challenging. Paula Klötzke is the consultant for international matters of MLU’s student council and helps international students at their arrival and during their stay in Halle. In the following interview she talks about a “number fetishism” that seems to have infected some universities, her work as consultant and the newly founded working group AK Internationales.
